Life on the mountain has been good to us. Seems that whether talking to new friends or old, the topic always gets around to the weather. Winter at almost 4500', 550 miles south of our previous home is actually much like our previous home. Except when you throw in the need to negotiate mountain roads.

And lately, I had a color scheme haunting me and it took shape in a mokume gane block of polymer layers. This technique always generates a lot of material, and my practice is to run it out in multiple pieces. So, I have this pile waiting for partial sanding and buffing. Next comes (mostly) custom findings and assembling. Finally, I get to photograph, write catchy descriptions and show them off online.

And over a year since we initially made the decision to leave our home of 27 years, and NW Ohio where we've both lived for our entire lives.
Looking out any of our windows confirms that we're not in NW Ohio anymore...
So far, we've done some hiking (just our street is a 300' climb, round-trip!), made some wonderful new friends, had a few wildlife adventures, watched the eclipse with over 96% totality, plus a few special friends and family have occupied our guest room. And, of course, done much research into the abundant local choices in food and drink!
Despite being in the South, we've traded for a very similar winter experience, due to our altitude of almost 4500'. It may be a bit milder overall, but these "hills" make any of the frozen stuff a challenge to get around in :D It's not really an issue since we never really have to go out....
I've gotten to work on some new designs, and have more swirling around in my head. My new studio was pretty well set until I got a reorganizing brainstorm. That's the curse (?) of a restless, creative mind. So now it's a bit torn up, as Dennis is taking the opportunity to paint as I choose a few new pieces of storage furniture.

The last week has been spent re-opening my Etsy Shop. Everything naturally expired, so I'm using the opportunity to take a curated approach - handling, checking connections, inspecting, generally evaluating each item to see if I still love it. I'm happy to find that the vast majority of pieces are passing the test!

After almost eight years, I decided that this break was also a good time to update the face of 11 BOLD street with a fresh, new look. I hope that you like it, and take a moment to browse the shop over the next few weeks as I gradually get back up to full inventory.

If you're in the Hilton Head/Bluffton SC area, you can also shop Old Town Bluffton, in particular, The Complete Home. This delightful little shop has a taste of 11BOLDstreet, along with other great finds!
I'm excited to have a new testing area soon at The Complete Home in Old Town Buffton. The owner, Mary O'Neill (yes, we are related...) has graciously granted space for some of my art. The shop is <span style="color: #242424; font-family: "enriqueta" , serif; font-size: 15px;">"an eclectic place filled with everything needed to complete your home and more! Our selections are unique and tasteful, often with a coastal flair."

<span style="color: #242424; font-family: "enriqueta" , serif;">

So, if you're in the area, stop in, visit Mary and her wonderful shop! <span style="color: #242424; font-family: "enriqueta" , serif;">

Go Appalachian State Mountaineers! (A team that we Buckeyes remember with fondness, and who fans of the "team up north" - not so much :D )

We're pretty excited, and scared, all at once :) We've lived here our entire lives and to paraphrase Bilbo Baggins, it's time for an adventure.

So, the house is listed, lots of things have been given away, sold, donated. Many boxes are packed, including my studio stuff. Creating is on-hold until we've sold, moved and settled in. I'm looking forward to inspiration in our new surroundings! Check back in a month or so and see what's happening.11BOLDstreethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02408942378458455694noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362456100073382.post-19311725903107870552016-10-13T11:08:00.004-04:002016-10-13T11:10:23.877-04:00PCAGOE October Showcase - Finished! Here's the finished product - fun, a bit creepy (with the removable tail!) with a contrasting textured outside and REALLY shiny inside. The theme was "In the Round".

The two pieces that I created incorporated my liquid polymer/gauze technique. I decided to go with BOLD, dramatic black and silver, featuring round, red accents which embraced the theme.

I created several round cabochons in a multi-step process, with bright, rich red cores. The gauze base of this brooch entry was formed inside of a round cutter:

I didn't win my category - Emerging Artist - Jewelry, but I still had fun creating these pieces. As my consolation, I was delighted to see that friend and former IPCA Retreat roommate Eva Haskova, from the Czech Republic won the Members Choice category with a wonderful brooch in her distinctive style!

Congratulations to all entrants and winners!

I've seen several gorgeous "all polymer" examples lately, but in the interest of time I chose to stick with wire for this project.

Using 14 ga silver plate wire, I wrapped a metal mandrel, trying to stay close to my chosen size. To even up the wraps, I then flipped over the wrapping to stretch the upper, smaller wraps to the same size.
Multiple bases could be created up to this point, just waiting for the final inspiration! I chose to cover this base with a rich, smoky purple, plus some shavings from a snake-skin block. A textured finish keeps the inevitable scratches to a minimum, but I just had to sand and buff the edges :D

I LOVE this idea, since I generally steer away from mass-marketed molds. That's because, well, they're MOLDS, as in, someone else's creation. BUT, before I hear angry cries, let me fully admit that there are some fabulous commercial molds out there, some by talented people in the polymer community. I admit to owning and using a few of these, as well as others from more obscure sources. I just try to "make them my own" in some way during the creation process, getting away from a (sometimes very recognizable) carbon copy of the original.

Here are some molds/plates that I've made over the years:

The lower left was the first, carved on cured polymer at a Tory Hughes workshop. It shows how tentative I was using her suggested carving tool, a #23 craft blade. I'm better with the lino tool on cured polymer! I did learn some important pointers from Tory, like keeping the blade still and moving/rotating the polymer substrate.

The upper right are molds taken with Sculpey Mold Maker from pieces of Debbie Jackson's coral collection.

The upper left are from antique buttons in my Mom's stash.

The middle bottom are reverse molds from a commercial rubber set (also Sculpey MM) - I wanted "innies" so that I could fill them for Sutton Slice techniques.

Making your own texture plate is fun, rewarding, and a bit "zen", if you take your time and think of it as doodling! My Challenge plate started as a 4"x 5"x 1/4" slab of scrap polymer. I "buffed" the raw surface with baking powder to smooth it as much as possible before starting to texture. Then I went crazy, mainly with some of my favorite tools, ball tip styluses. I left some areas blank and cured for 60 min. Then, I went back and carved some curves with my Speedball lino tool. Cured polymer holds sharper edges than raw and I didn't want any depressions along the edges of the curves.

Here is my actual entry piece for the Challenge - a set of compact mirror and key fob. I would have liked to have done something a bit more complex with the stamped sheet, but as many of you know, I've had some time constraints over the last 10 months :)

I started with a custom coppery-bronzing metallic polymer mix, made my impression and cured. Then, I antiqued with dark brown acrylic, and hit the high spots with bronze Gilder's Paste. I don't normally like to final coat pieces in any way, but since these will be handled a lot, a satin sealer is probably a smart idea to protect the Gilder's Paste over time.

Her unique designs and her engaging personality captured our hearts. As her room mate, I was especially lucky!

Her demo showing how she creates the wonderful wrapped effect evident in the neckwear, brooches and earrings that everyone was snapping up set off one of those magical clicks in my own brain...

I've done some work with cut strips, but I always laid them flat. What if I did as Eva does, and turned them on end? And made them thicker (BOLDER)? And perhaps polished them in typical 11BOLDstreet layered fashion? AND, what if I combined them with gauze and liquid polymer?

These five pieces are the first results of some experimentation. (More photos will be included in the Etsy listings in the next few days.)

The black and jewel tone brooch group colors grew from a favorite piece of alcohol ink-stained gauze. With some liquid polymer to add stiffness and shape, I used pieces as interior focals for three brooches.

I cut strips of coordination polymer, wrapped it around cutters and cured, then sanded and sanded and sanded... After buffing, I attached the gauze centers. Plus, some silvery wire and paint accents.
The fourth brooch and the valet featured a totally different color scheme - black with mixed metallics. I chose to leave the brooch unsanded matte, but employed texture in holes filled with mica-tinted liquid polymer.

The cut strip portion of the valet was built around a cured piece of gauze, and the supporting back finished similarly to the brooch. I also chose not to sand down the polymer portion of the top - just a good buffing to bring up a nice luster.
We had SO much fun, shared so much and learned so many new things!

As a committee member, my main task was to administer the Pin Panel, which was this events equivalent of the Bead Strands from past Retreats. Everyone was to contribute two (near) identical arch-themed brooches, each of which found a home on two prepared panels. One was auctioned at our banquet on Friday night by Lisa Pavelka, and the other was shuttled off to a secret vault to be archived for future generations of polymer artists (I think).

Some attendees asked about the panels themselves, commenting that they were interested in something similar for displaying their own pins/brooches. Here is what I did, and what I learned:

The board details evolved from my architectural background - Form Follows Function. As you undoubtedly have discovered, it's a nightmare not to pin to a flat, padded surface, but to fasten the clasp! So, I needed a raised element on which to mount all those gorgeous works.

I considered cotton upholstery cording, and took a pin back to Jo-Ann's to see if it penetrated easily. It seemed to be okay. So I hot-glued the cording to a stretched canvas (the canvas was Debbie Jackson's suggestion). Tip #1: Be neat with your hot glue, and don't stray past the edges of the cording. Excess glue lumps will show through fabric.

To secure the fabric, I applied fabric glue to only the canvas between the cording so as not to gum up the pins. Which glue? I used several, since I ran out - look for fabric glues, and do a small test on the back of the canvas. Tip #2: Spread, glue evenly but sparingly to avoid bubbles when dry on smooth fabrics. (Which is why some areas of the linen panel have an extra layer of my trade-mark gauze applied!) With the crinkled fabric, this was not such a problem. Start in the middle of the canvas, and with the center of the fabric, applying glue section by section. Smooth and press the fabric into the glue. Don't stretch it. Neatly tuck and fold as required and wrap around the edges of the canvas, securing on the back with more glue, hot glue, staples, etc.

I also did a tone-on-tone metallic bronze paint on a few of the linen areas, just for a bit of subtle contrast. I wanted the panel itself to be interesting on a wall, without detracting from the art itself.

Even with no glue on the cording, many pins ultimately had some trouble penetrating the thicker part of the cording, as apparently not all pin findings are super sharp. I ended up sliding most of the pins through just the fabric on the front of the ridges (and was really, really glad that the fabric here was loose and not glued to the cording!). On a redo, maybe I'd look for a different material - small diameter foam tubes? Randomly spaced domes of individual packing peanuts?

The ends results were impressive, but mostly because of the pins themselves! What varied, thoughtful and creative ART!!! I was happy to have provided a worthy backdrop.

FYI - all pins were numbered/photographed, and will soon be available (sometime in September) for your viewing pleasure - keep an eye on the IPCA and ARCHES FB pages!

This month's challenge was to start with a 1" black ball of polymer. No other instruction, other than it had to be recognizable in it's final form. And, we wanted to tie-in with PCAGOE member Sage Bray's publication, The Polymer Arts, or her daily blog.

Sage is very open to unusual polymer techniques for inclusion. This pen with stand expands upon an idea that I floated past her and which was included in the Spring '12 issue.

Instead of only chopped translucent polymer of the article, this piece utilizes metallics, remains of other techniques and metal leaf to adorn the polished black ball starting point. Tendrils of mica tinted liquid polymer were added for shine and adhesion.
Naturally, I had to incorporate my typical layered base ("Layers" was another article that made it in the Spring '13 issue.) And, one edge of the base got sanded and buffed ;)

Right off, I'll state the qualifier that I'm not on any meds (prescription or otherwise) that would readily account for this odd occurrence, and that I wait until dinner to enjoy my glass of red wine ... (Actually, that only makes this weirder!)

Earlier this month, I was working on my challenge piece, which involved embedded chunks of sea glass into a layered polymer bowl.

I knew that one piece was loose - simply embedding in raw polymer didn't suffice for this little guy, and I'd have to either try some liquid polymer or glue. It was loose in the bowl. While sitting at my main work area, I tilted the entire bowl and this chunk of green glass (a rough triangle about 3/4" x 3/8") fell onto my lap, then to the floor. I heard it land!

Scooting back my chair, I began to search. My chair sits partly on a dark, multi-colored carpet and partly on oak hardwood. Do you think that I could find that piece???

I crawled around, my nose almost literally touching the floor, since I'm pretty near-sighted. I patted the floor, inch by inch. I got a flashlight and looked under adjacent shelving units. I looked into containers on the first couple of shelves, thinking that it might have bounced. Then, I pulled the units out, just to make sure.

I shook out my sweat pants (hey - I started running again, so no cracks about the "work-at-home wardrobe"!). I took off my (running!) shoes, looked in the tops of my socks.

Soon, I felt like laughing, then I started to get annoyed 'cause I was basically finished and now I realized that I had to fill the empty hole left by a very distinctive shape! I found a similar shape and after some carving, trenching and filling, I made the new piece fit.

But, the original piece of sea glass is still missing... I have concluded that there is a multi-dimensional vortex in the knee space under my work surface and that it sucked in a bit of green sea glass. My counterpart in this parallel dimension happened to find the perfect bit for her challenge piece lying on the floor.

While I wait for more inspiring content (that is, with WORDS, not with art), let me just share my entry from our PCAGOE March Challenge. The theme was "egg/egg shapes". So, I created an egg-shaped fantasy stone in pinks, took a slice and "set" it in an all-polymer bezel. Texturing, carving and a bit of antiquing completed this brooch. Finally, a bit of coiled silver wire and mica powder add BLING!

11BOLDstreethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02408942378458455694noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362456100073382.post-32801375997063716522013-11-20T09:13:00.000-05:002013-11-20T09:13:26.916-05:00Another "Redo"I noticed while reorganizing after the chaos that is the "tear-down" following a show, that one of the polymer bicone beads on this faux lapis lazuli choker was cracked. The tension was too tight on the stringing wire and the sterling spacer bead had worked it's way into the beads end.

Not sure what I was going to do, it was obvious that repairs at the least, were inevitable. Luckily, this neckpiece was constructed in two separately strung parts, so I wasn't going to have to deal with back portion and all the smaller seed beads.

First, I looked through polymer components, but nothing suitable was available. Next, I considered sterling and/or coiled wire beads. It wasn't just a matter of closing up the gap left by the bicones - this piece needed both the interest and the length provided by these elements.

Finally, I sorted through my miscellaneous beads. I found two black onyx parts from a pair of interchangeable "door knocker" earrings (remember those?) But, given their size, they didn't look right in the same space as the bicones - too big. I moved the smaller ingots outward, provided a slide for the onyx with a couple of sterling crimp tubes and hung them with large jumprings. They don't lie completely flat, but hang at a bit of an angle.

I like it! This choker looks updated and a bit more interesting, don't you think?11BOLDstreethttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02408942378458455694noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5867362456100073382.post-52510700766453490692013-09-26T16:16:00.000-04:002013-09-26T16:16:16.784-04:00Fair Feathered FriendsI have two parrots, Neelix and Kes (yes, my StarTrek geekiness is showing). The first is a normal cockatiel male, the second is a blue-headed Pionus parrot female. They have lived with us for over 15 years. Parrots typically molt (shed old feathers to make room for new) several times a year. I'm blessed with beautiful gray and white (Neelix) and mostly green (Kes).

She also has magnificent tail feathers that are tri-color, blue, red and green. I especially watch for these on the cage bottom, not only because they are so unusual, but because I've wanted to do something polymer-related with them for some time.

Last week, she also gifted me with some tiny, delicate mostly red feathers that I knew would be wonderful layered with the tri-color. So, making sure that I had both "right" and "left" pieces (they are actually a bolder color on the "front"), I constructed a layered polymer base of navy blue, red center and green, textured back. With custom sterling earwires and findings, these earrings practically made themselves!

Need help deciding? Here is a graphic that has been floating around the internet with some great suggestions for this pleasant dilemma...
I created a transfer and applied it to a sheet of off-white polymer. Then I layered that sheet onto one of my favorite right-from-the-package colors of Premo polymer - Rhino Grey - to which I added a bit of texture and antiquing.

This assembly got backed with multiple textures in black, the end portions receiving additional coloring in the form of chalk stamp ink. The base of this valet/bowl is a chunky polymer block in a stamped abstract pattern of rhino, off-white and black. Fun, home decor graphics!!!
